Course Description

This course aims at bringing to students a broadened understanding of drawing through taking a fresh and experimental approach to the study of various media. Students are guided through a discovery journey of drawing to learn how to “read” drawings, how lines and space are organized, what visual effects or concepts are communicated, and to develop a creative approach in problem solving. They will experiment with line, tone, texture, scale and composition, and work with different media and tools to approach a broad range of subjects from still life to abstract pattern.

Requirements

  • Timely completion of assignments and thematic works;
  • Participation in group and individual critiques;
  • Attendance and being on-time for each lesson.
  • Please note that students will have to pay for their own materials fee involved in the creation by themselves. Estimate cost will be around HK$250

  1. Demonstrate critical thinking on drawing as an art form through art work critique, presentation and exhibition
  2. Use creative and experimental skills on drawing and mark-making as a medium of expression and communication
  3. Describe the history, concepts and theories of experimental drawing
  4. Appreciate the experimental drawings of various artists in modern China and 20th century western art

Week 1: Introducing the practice of Drawing, including the experimental drawing in 20th -21st centuries.

Week 2: Drawing without looking – Blind-Drawing and Eye-opened Drawing

Week 3: Action Drawing – dance with lines – how music engages in lines exploration

Week 4-6: From Copy to Create – lines from Chinese Painting

Week 7-8: Figure Drawing and its relationship to human being

Week 9-10: Drawing and Object – drawing with senses and languages

Week 11: Group Activity: unconventional tools for drawing

Week 12: Exhibition Design

Week 13: Exhibition Presentation and Course Conclusion
