Course Description
This course aims at bringing to students a broadened unThis course aims at bringing to students a broadened understanding of drawing through taking a fresh and experimental approach to the study of various media. Students are guided through a discovery journey of drawing to learn how to “read” drawings, how lines and space are organized, what visual effects or concepts are communicated, and to develop a creative approach in problem solving. They will experiment with line, tone, texture, scale and composition, and work with different media and tools to approach a broad range of subjects from still life to abstract pattern.
- Demonstrate critical thinking on drawing as an art form through art work critique, presentation and exhibition
- Use creative and experimental skills on drawing and mark-making as a medium of expression and communication
- Describe the history, concepts and theories of experimental drawing
- Appreciate the experimental drawings of various artists in modern China and 20th century western art
Week 1-2: Introduction and Drawing without pencils – Elimination, Fumage and Frottage
Week 3-4: 1st Assignment – “Series of work” and Critique
Week 5: Group Drawing – Exquisite Corpse and Memo Collage
Week 6: Scissor Drawing – Étrécissement, Collage, Gouaches Découpés
Week 7: Stippling – Pointillism and Pixel Drawing
Week 8-9: 2nd Assignment – “Self-portrait” and Critique
Week 10-11: Final Assignment Development
Week 12-13: Exhibition Design and Final Exhibition
