Course Description

This course aims to introduce students to the creative potential and concepts of installation art. Students will explore and experience their surroundings in unfamiliar ways, and discover new understanding of their living environment and new ways of artistic creation. Students will gain an understanding of the streams of development and the creative concepts of installation art, as well as its influences to both visual arts and the society. Students will also learn to explore space, materials, forms, contents and techniques in installation art. Upon the completion of the course, students will experience making use of spatial design as a means of communication and expression.


  1. Describe and appreciate the history and development of installation art
  2. Identify the aesthetic, cultural and social elements of installation art
  3. Apply the artistic concepts to the process of art making
  4. Use installation art as a medium of expression and communication

Part 1: Understand the spatial elements of installation art

Week 1: Installation art in everyday life

Week 2: Defining space – discovering space of art making

Week 3: Materiality in installation art

Week 4: Experience of time in installation art

 

Part 2: Understand our surroundings – installation art as an interface to interact with our community

Week 5: The influence of situationist international

Week 6: Introduction of happenings and performance arts

Week 7: Space as narrative medium 1

 

Part 3: Understand current practice of installation artists – installation art as an expression tool

Week 8: Space as narrative medium 2

Week 9: Installation art in Hong Kong

Week 10-11: Final exhibitions set up

Week 12-13: Critique of final exhibition
