Course Description

This course aims at bringing to students a broadened understanding of drawing through taking a fresh and experimental approach to the study of various media. Students are guided through a discovery journey of drawing to learn how to “read” drawings, how lines and space are organized, what visual effects or concepts are communicated, and to develop a creative approach in problem solving. They will experiment with line, tone, texture, scale and composition, and work with different media and tools to approach a broad range of subjects from still life to abstract pattern.


  1. Demonstrate critical thinking on drawing as an art form through art work critique, presentation and exhibition
  2. Use creative and experimental skills on drawing and mark-making as a medium of expression and communication
  3. Describe the history, concepts and theories of experimental drawing
  4. Appreciate the experimental drawings of various artists in modern China and 20th century western art

Week 1: From traditional to experimental drawing

Week 2: Unique way of individual through drawing

Week 3: Blind Drawing – the difference between observation and hand movements

Week 4: Drawing and Object – form, colour, texture and weight of an object

Week 5: Time and Figure Drawing

Week 6: Dismantle conventions of drawing

Week 7: Music and Drawing – marking and mapping a piece of music

Week 8: Writing and Drawing – using writing and words to draw

Week 9: Conceptual Drawing

Week 10: Group Critique on four drawing assignments

Week 11: Final assignment development

Week 12: Exhibition Design

Week 13: Final Group Critique and Course Conclusion
