Course Description

This course introduces students to printmaking through three printmaking media and techniques: relief printing, planographic printing and Inkodye printing. The significance of printmaking in the historical and cultural context, as well as its status in art history, will be covered. Two to three important artists of the three printmaking methods will be introduced. Students will learn about major printmaking techniques through demonstration and project-based, hands-on class activities. Basic elements of art in the printed compositions will be stressed. Through individual presentation and group critiques, students will also learn how to analyze printmaking works


  1. Describe and appreciate the importance of printmaking in art history and contemporary art
  2. Organize and apply different printing procedures and techniques in a sequential manner
  3. Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the principles of design, elements of art and composition in relation to the printmaking process

Week 9: Stencil and Silkscreen Printing

Week 10-11: Contemporary Printing Artists and Practices
